Jesus as Leader and Mentor By Tami Heim

Christian Leadership Alliance

By Tami Heim

There is much we can learn from Jesus as leader and mentor.

Jesus modeled teaching and mentoring after he called the first disciples to follow him. He connected with them where they were and shared a greater possibility of them transforming into “fishers of men.”  The Scriptures detail how Jesus deeply invested in those he called. In the process of advancing the development of the team, Jesus daily practiced listening, teaching, encouraging and holding them accountable.

When you study Jesus as leader and mentor you discover the following:

  • Jesus demonstrated the ability to cast vision. (Read Matthew 4:18-20)
  • Jesus selected a small team to initiate a great work. (Read Mark 3:13)
  • Jesus demonstrated integrity by matching his words to action. (Read Matthew 5:1-12)
  • Jesus deliberately set expectations and was behaviorally specific in coaching. (Read Matthew 10:5-40)
  • Jesus challenged his team to steward their gifts. (Read Matthew 25:14-30)
  • Jesus confronted and cautioned his team. (Read Matthew 16:1-12)
  • Jesus flipped the notion of leadership as power to one of service. (Read Matthew 20:1-18)

As Christian leaders we are called to follow Jesus and that includes being and doing.

This is the time of year when many are reflecting on the past year and setting goals for the new one. As you think ahead, what will you do to significantly invest in your leadership development? How will you be intentional about the development of the team(s) you’ve been called to lead? How can you follow more closely the example of Jesus as leader and mentor?
